LCI Donates Computers to Wilson, Oklahoma Public Schools
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Leader Communications Incorporated (LCI) donated 13 computers to Wilson Public Schools this summer after hearing of their need during the Aerospace Education and Training Day General Session.

“We have been looking for some time for an appropriate organization to donate the extra PCs,” said Steve Gorton, LCI Information Systems Manager.

The Oklahoma Aerospace Summit and Expo hosted the first ever Aerospace Education & Training Day to pair teachers with Oklahoma aerospace professionals. LCI attended this event to be a part of mentoring teachers across Oklahoma. LCI is an Oklahoma small IT business committed to community involvement, and is mentoring 11 Oklahoma teachers. LCI attended the Aerospace Education and Training Day General Session and met Debby Venable, a teacher from Wilson School. During the general session, Venable expressed her need and desire for computers at Wilson School.

“I consider myself very, very fortunate to have been chosen as an Aerospace Fellow in the state of Oklahoma,” Venable said. “Through this opportunity, I have been given the chance to meet and become a partner with many wonderful people in the aerospace industry who are truly concerned about helping children in our Oklahoma schools prepare for a career in the aerospace industry.”

Wilson Public Schools is a small rural school in Okmulgee County just north of Henryetta, which serves about 302 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Wilson Schools has a high Native American population and is a Title I school (Title I - Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Disadvantaged of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act).

“I was so fortunate to get the opportunity to address the roundtable discussion at the aerospace conference and ask the panel, including General Robinson, about how in my situation and my area of the state, would I be able to get some assistance in implementing more STEM courses, when I lack the very basics of any technology such as computers and software,” Venable said.

LCI approached Venable about donating 13 computers to the school. Venable said these computers will have a tremendous effect on their children by allowing each room to have a computer. LCI has been upgrading company PCs to newer hardware, and it is their policy to donate the older hardware to a school, organization, church, charity or non-profit organization. Gorton said Wilson School could benefit from their gift.

Venable said she would love to have software to expose the students to more math and science that can be incorporated into the normal classroom, a mobile science lab for each class or just one that can be shared by the classes, headphones for any computers, and calculators for math.

“I hope that my opportunity as an Aerospace Fellow and my crusade to help kids achieve will be a great partnership,” Venable said.
